The sub-plot of the malicious and defamation-spreading social worker is based on a true story, but it did not occur in the North-East of England. Had Mary not been sure of her own instincts and stood her ground, he would have dragged her into a quagmire of self-doubt, depicting her as mentally disturbed and in need of ‘support’.
Even worse than the original crime were the social service chiefs who then ordered all their staff to lie and also bribed with a slush-fund pay-out a manager in a sister organisation to retract her damning statement.
