The canvas by Orazio Gentileschi – as used on the cover – depicts an episode from Tommaso da Celano’s hagiography of Saint Francis. Gentileschi was born in Pisa in 1563 and died in London in 1639. In 1603 he borrowed a pair of false wings and a Capuchin monk’s habit from Caravaggio, almost certainly for this painting. The spotlight effect and the disposition of the characters fix it as early Baroque rather than late Renaissance.
